چکیده

It is a generally accepted principle that the respiratory quotient is influenced by the composition of the food eaten, but the effect on it of the quantity of food seems to have been neglected. Occasional papers can be found which contain data showing an increase in R.Q. at higher intakes (e.g. Williams, Riche & LuSk, 1912; Forbes, Swift, Elliott & James, 1946)) but the levels used are too few to just@ quantitative inferences. One reason for this omission is undoubtedly that the field has been dominated by the important conception of ‘basal metabolism’, so that most studies have been carried out on animals in the post-absorptive state, and periods of observation have tended to be short. The evidence for a quantitative relationship between R.Q. and food intake which is presented in this paper is derived from observations made over 24 hr. periods on animals provided with food and drink.

Energy homeostasis and gastric emptying in ghrelin knockout mice.

To elucidate the role of endogenous ghrelin in the regulation of energy homeostasis and gastric emptying, ghrelin knockout mice (ghrelin(-/-)) were generated. Body weight, food intake, respiratory quotient, and heat production (indirect calorimetry), and gastric emptying ((14)C breath test) were compared between ghrelin(+/+) and ghrelin(-/-) mice. In both strains, the effect of exogenous ghreli...

The 24-hour respiratory quotient predicts energy intake and changes in body mass.

To define the relationship between the respiratory quotient (RQ) and energy intake (EI) and to determine the impact of spontaneous locomotor activity (LMA) in the development of diet-induced obesity (DIO), we fed C57BL/6 mice a high-fat diet (HFD) for either 4 days or 17 wk and analyzed them using indirect calorimetry. Importantly, changes in body mass during calorimetry (DeltaM(b)) significant...

Overview of Relationship of Allergic Asthma with Diet and Food Intake

Allergic asthma is the most common acute inflammatory airway disorder and their incidence population has exploded in the last years, being estimated that over 300 million people worldwide have the condition. Here, we present a brief overview of relationship of allergic asthma with diet and food intake. Several studies have shown that most asthma cases are due to an allergic immune response to e...

Enhancing hepatic mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation stimulates eating in food-deprived mice.

Hepatic fatty acid oxidation (FAO) has long been implicated in the control of eating. Nevertheless, direct evidence for a causal relationship between changes in hepatic FAO and changes in food intake is still missing. Here we tested whether increasing hepatic FAO via adenovirus-mediated expression of a mutated form of the key regulatory enzyme of mitochondrial FAO carnitine palmitoyltransferase...

Modeling Energy Dynamics in Mice with Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy Fed High Calorie Diets

Retrospective and prospective studies show that lean mass or strength is positively associated with metabolic health. Mice deficient in myostatin, a growth factor that negatively regulates skeletal muscle mass, have increased muscle and body weights and are resistant to diet-induced obesity. Their leanness is often attributed to higher energy expenditure in the face of normal food intake. Howev...
